Using DebateFlow

AI Cleanup

AI Cleanup rewrites the notes you typed for the speech you are on. It is the one place in DebateFlow where AI changes your own words, so it only ever runs when you tap it.

Where the button is

At the top right of the notes box, next to the word "Notes". It has a small sparkle on it and says AI Cleanup.

While it is working it says "Cleaning...". That takes a few seconds.

What it does

It reads two things: the notes in the box, and the transcript of that speech. Then it puts a rewritten version in the box, in place of what you typed.

The rewrite:

  • finishes your shorthand and your half-written lines
  • adds what was actually said, from the transcript
  • fixes spelling and typing
  • keeps your order and your headings

It does not bring in points you did not write about. If you noted three things, you get those three things back with more words on each.

It only touches the notes for the team that is speaking. The other team's notes stay as they are, and so do your notes on every other speech.

Nothing else in the round changes. Not the transcript, not the moments you marked, not what you tapped on the per-speech screen, and not the analysis.

How to get your own words back

Tap Undo, which appears beside the button after a cleanup. Your notes come back exactly as you typed them.

Undo lasts until you move on

Undo disappears when you go to the next speech. After that, the rewritten notes are the ones the round keeps, and there is no way back to what you typed.

There is one step back, not a history. If you tap AI Cleanup twice, Undo returns the version from just before the second tap - not the words you first typed.

Press Stop first

The button is grey until a speech in the round has been stopped. The app writes down a speech when you press Stop, and the cleanup has nothing to read before that. It is also grey while the notes box is empty.

If you tap it while a speech is still running, that speech has not been written down yet. You get your own words tidied up, and nothing added from the transcript.

When you will not see it

Question time between the teams (crossfire). Those stages are not recorded, so there is no transcript to read from. Crossfire gives you a notes box for each team, and neither one has the button.

When the analysis columns are showing. Turning on "Show analysis during rounds" in Settings puts the analysis beside your notes from the rebuttals on. The notes column in that view has no AI Cleanup button. The setting is off unless you turn it on, so most rounds have the button on every speech.

Why it matters what you leave in the box

Your notes do not stop at the round. When you finish, the app gathers your notes for each team and uses them twice:

  • the decision wizard shows them back to you while you decide
  • the feedback the app drafts for the students is written partly from them

So the words in the box are the words the app works from afterwards. If a rewrite says something you did not mean, edit it or tap Undo before you move on.

Where your notes go

Your notes are sent to an AI to be rewritten. Every name in them is hidden first. The real names are put back before you see the result. The same thing happens to the transcript and to everything else the app sends.

Full detail: Names, and what the AI model sees.

Why it works this way

It never runs on its own. Your notes are yours. Nothing you typed changes unless you tap the button, and the app does no cleanup in the background or at the end of the round.

One speech at a time. It only ever sees the speech you are on, so it cannot pull a line from the second half of the round into your notes on the first speech.

If it fails, your notes are untouched. A red message at the top of the screen says the cleanup failed, and the box stays exactly as you left it. Tap Try Again in that message to run the cleanup again, or carry on. Nothing was lost.
